How to Live the Boss Life - Part 2

Working 9 to 5 in a cubicle isn’t for everyone. Maybe you find it boring. Maybe the thought of eating yet another lunch at your computer is enough to make you scream. Relax. We’ve got you. Whether you’re looking for a total career overhaul or a lucrative side hustle, taking the plunge to be your own boss can have serious benefits. Recently, we introduced you to some amazing female entrepreneurs who are already living the Boss Life. Now, get ready to meet three more women who successfully went out on their own—and never looked back. From business tips to beauty tricks, here’s how they do it all, all on their own.

Hitha Palepu, 32

My business:

“I’m editor of the lifestyle blog, Hitha On The Go. I’m also the co-founder of Bridge2Act, a platform that’s transforming the giving process. My first book, How To Pack, was released on March 7th.”

Why I became my own boss:

“Two years ago, I was mulling a career change from business development in the pharma industry, when my best friend came to me with a revolutionary idea focused on bridging the media, nonprofits, and the readers to enable taking action—the moment you felt compelled. I decided to take the plunge, because I loved the idea and I loved my team. It was the second-best surprise that year—the first was finding out I was expecting a baby!”

Favorite thing about working for myself:

“I love the autonomy. I have a young son and a second business I’m managing, and I couldn’t be the mother or the businesswoman I am if I had to work for anyone else. And even though I don’t get to my computer until noon on some days, or work until 1 a.m on others, it’s worth it, because it’s my work.”

The hardest thing about it:

“I do miss having external direction, i.e. being told what to do. When you’re the boss, it’s on you to prioritize and delegate.”

Best business tip:

“You can only be one person at a time—a writer, a businesswoman, a mom, a friend. Be the best writer/boss lady/mama you can be in that moment. Give it your all and you’ll be far more productive and satisfied than if you try to multitask. One great way to enforce this tip is to work in a single window on your computer at a time and hide everything else.”

Best beauty tip:

“I didn’t start filling in my eyebrows until two years ago, and I have no clue why I didn’t start sooner! Even if I’m working from home in leggings, I’ll dab on some concealer and fill in my brows. I’m always more productive on the days I take two minutes for a little glam.”

My business:

Inspiralized is my culinary brand dedicated to cooking creatively, healthfully, and deliciously with a spiralizer, the kitchen countertop tool that turns vegetables and fruits into noodles. Inspiralized consists of a daily recipe and resource blog, two New York Times best-selling cookbooks, a Recipe App, and a branded, proprietary spiralizer called the Inspiralizer.”

Why I became my own boss:

“When I discovered spiralized veggies, I was immediately blown away by how much they mimicked the texture of actual pasta. As an Italian American who has always struggled with portion control, this helped me find a healthier alternative to one of my favorite foods. I started spiralizing every night and writing recipes at lunchtime while working my corporate job. I noticed that there was no community built around spiralizing—no resources or recipes on the Internet—so I decided to start one. I built up the courage, walked into my boss's office, and quit. The next day, I went to a coffee shop and started Inspiralized with one single blog post.”

Favorite thing about working for myself:

“You see the direct results of your efforts and the correlation between hard work and success. It's the most gratifying feeling to put effort into something and see it grow.”

The hardest thing about it:

“You can't really call in sick and can't truly sign off. You can't just check out, and if you do, you'll see it negatively impact your business. If you work a traditional position at a job with an employer, if you call in sick, there are people and a team to back you up in your absence. As an entrepreneur, it's just you.”

Best business tip:

“It's a tip I picked up from [life coach and motivational speaker] Marie Forleo: ‘Schedule your priorities; don't prioritize your schedule.’ It's easy to clear your inbox or complete your daily tasks. It's a lot harder to accomplish a big project, and if you keep putting it off, it'll never get done. The bigger, harder projects are the ones that move the needle in your business, and if you don't prioritize them first, you won't achieve success as quickly as you'd like.”

Best beauty tip:

“Never go to bed without taking off your makeup, cleansing, and moisturizing. It's a cardinal rule for me, no matter how late it is.”

Lisa Scola, 46

My business:

“I have been an Avon Representative for 15 years. I’ve raised my three children off of my Avon earnings and I love my business!”

Why I became my own boss:

“I was a stay-at-home mom when I started. I had been a lab tech, but I got laid off when I had my first child. When I had my daughter a year and a half later, I decided I needed to do something to get out of the house and also for some extra money. So, I chose Avon. I couldn't have been happier to have this to fall back on and build as big as I have. And it’s still growing!”

Favorite thing about working for yourself:

“I love the freedom that I have to be with my kids and never miss anything in their lives. As a single mom of three, it's a struggle. But with my own business, I have been there for my children, and by making it a success, they have seen how anything is possible with hard work. I love how proud my children are. They brag about me!”

The hardest thing about it:

“It's not easy working from home—finding a schedule that you can stick with, doing the work instead of getting sidetracked, staying motivated when there's no one to tell you what needs to be done. The longer you stick with it and be consistent, the more success you find.”

Best business tip:

“Make a plan. Set a schedule for you and for you and your family. Be diligent and persistent. Read motivational material to keep you focused, and most importantly, never give up.”

Best beauty tip:

“Beauty is what makes our world what it is. Everyone loves it and wants it. Just be the best example of how beauty works in your life and people will be attracted to that.”
